Inaugural Draft Review: Round 2

Four seasons on, and our round 2 selections are exceeding the performance of our round 1 cornerstones – by a considerable margin. Eight of these players have been All-Australians at some point in our competition’s history.

7 of our selections have career averages over 100. Kennedy isn’t far off, and Selwood’s is only dented by a disastrous 2019. There are no terrible selections here, though Ellis going this high is not ideal. Being sandwiched between Treloar and Neale stings.

Four players no longer play for the club who drafted them. Kennedy has spent most of his career with the Scourers, having jumped ship in April of our inaugural season. It’s a similar story for Neale.

Beams and Selwood both made their way to the Defenestrators in 2019, and in truth are more closely associated with the teams that drafted them.

Best Pick: Patrick Dangerfield – Pick 13 (Puttanesca Chiefs)

Two best picks in a row for the Chiefs. Beginning to see why they’re two-time premiers…

As mentioned before, it’s a strong field, but there’s no credible argument to be made for anyone other than Dangefield. He’s played more than 70 games, and averaged the most. He’s won a Dangergawn. Throw in two flags, and the season of forward eligibility, and it’s a wash.

An honourable mention to Adam Treloar, who trails behind Danger on thin margins – and had a superior 2019 as far as raw scoring goes.

Worst Pick: Brandon Ellis – Pick 17 (Redshins)

Hard to look past the guy with a career average 14 points below the next lowest.

That said, we probably need to acknowledge a different name might appear here if we were to do this again in a few years’ time.

Ellis had a resurgence in 2019, and his move to the Gold Coast brings a potential increase in responsibility and scoring. Selwood dropped off considerably this year, averaging almost 6 points less a game than the former Tiger. If both players continued that trend, this may become a genuine argument.
