Season Summary
Coach Rowan’s first year in the chair was a thrilling ride. He experienced some massive highs, scoring the 2nd highest score of the round in his first match up on his way to being undefeated across the first 3 rounds and beating finalists the Defenestrators in Round 14. However this early success may have provided a false sense of security as TLM couldn’t keep their grasp on the finals spot and ultimately pivoted to next year ahead of the final rounds of the season.
But looking ahead to the future, I give you three names: Gulden, Serong, Sheezel. There will be many years of great times watching these three sit at the top of the scoring tree, and they are surely the pillars of this team. But these are not the only names for the TLM fanbase to be excited about as the likes of Rowell, Moore, Bailey, Perkins and Phillips all project as long term talents. Add in the proven high end scoring of Guthrie, Wines, De Goey and a guy named Wilkie, who some dunce listed as borderline keepable, you have the foundation of a strong keeper list for years to come.
The question now is can coach Rowan find another gem from the draft and to continue to build on this core. And maybe just as importantly will 2024 be the year that this team breaks their finals drought.

Most Inspired Selection
Harry Sheezel
Pick 4
For a first time AFL keeper league drafter this draft had some of the biggest hits in the league, but they were few and far between, and could be one reason this team primed for finals didn’t make the cut. Every good team needs depth and this draft exposed that.
For the positives, Sheezel is the obvious one, undoubtedly the biggest hit of the draft for any team. Period. 18 yr olds + 94 average = superstar. Great find by coach Rowan. Wood was another, which I called in the preseason review (instead of ya know actually picking him myself) and some massive scores out of the blocks set the tone for the team to prepare to take off for a finals run. Blicavs was also a steal in the 3rd round, providing solid scoring and durability. Zach Guthrie was a great pick past the half way mark of the draft and Mitch Lewis and Oskar Baker proved serviceable at the bottom of the draft.
Outside of that, there’s… really… nothing. In this author’s opinion Rowston and Fin Macrae were high upside dart throws that didn’t land (and coach Rowan probably saw a few more in that draft pool in that light too). I can’t knock a guy for making those calls, but with every gamble, it hurts when it doesn’t pay off. I almost put DBJ as the steal of the draft, when an almost 80 averaging defender in his prime is taken in the sixth round, that should be the safest pick in the draft. But Byrne-Jones clearly left his soul in the backline, as his lifeless body flitted around the forward half seemingly disinterested in going near the football. I can only assume his antics were an unsuccessful ploy to show Hinkley ‘I’m clearly not good as a forward, you’ll have to shove me back in defence’.
All that to say, I give this draft a tick if only for Sheezel alone, as at the end of the day I’d give a draft full of serviceable bench cover (and probably more) for the high end talent of a guy like Sheezel. Nothing else matters.
Trades
The first two trades brought in prodigious talents in Wines and De Goey both having demonstrated top end talent in their careers and at the time, this suited Threat Level Midnight’s strategy of going all in for finals. As competition for finals spots grew tight late in the season, a second set of trades saw young talent and draft picks come in to give TLM plenty of options to monitor in the offseason and at the 2024 draft. These were all arguably the right moves to make for where this team was positioning themselves at the time.

Player To Watch in 2024
Archie Perkins
A player right at that breakout age, but is unfortunately stuck in a log jam of a midfield. With Merrett and Parish the outright stars of this midfield, and Setterfield, Shiel, Stringer, Caldwell, Hobbs and Tsatas all vying for time, it paints a murky and troubling picture for how Perkins increases his on ball time. But it is interesting to note that it was Perkins who increased his midfield time the most in this team between the start and the end of the season, and notably he offers a point of difference from the rest of this midfield with plenty of class and skill. It’s no guarantee, but if he does break out it will build on an already solid core of young talent that are surely marching towards sustained success.
