2018 Pre-Season Survey Review

So I think we did even worse than last year.

  • We all paid the price for not showing enough respect to the Puttanesca Chiefs. Maybe the Docherty injury scared us all, but none of us thought they would win the flag. None of us thought they would even appear in the grand final again.
  • None of us thought they would take out the minor premiership either. One coach, Jordan, correctly backed them for highest round score though.
  • None of us were as disrespectful as Luke though, who thought the Chiefs would finish 8th.
  • Luke thought his side would finish 6th. Though he also listed himself as one of the teams to miss the finals. I believe this is known as having your cake, and eating it too.
  • All coaches not named Paul thought the Defenestrators would make the grand final. Three coaches thought they would play the Scourers. Another three thought they would play the Roughnecks. Paul thought the Scourers and Roughnecks would play each other.
  • All coaches not named Paul thought Defenestrators would be the premier.
  • We fared much better in matters bottom of the table. Half the league accurately predicted the four sides to miss out on finals action.
  • All 5 of those coaches were finalists. Clearly, they had a good sense of who their rivals were. Nelson was the only finalist to guess incorrectly, backing Such is Fyfe in place of MaherShalalHashBaz.
  • Only four coaches predicated the eventual wooden spooners would be The Bailout Plan. Three coaches thought the Soldiers would make it a hat-trick, while another thought it would fall to Such is Fyfe.
  • None of us accurately predicted the order of the ladder at the end of the home and away season. I won’t hold that against us though.

Player awards were a similar story.

  • Three coaches correctly predicted Tom Mitchell would take home the Dangergawn again (Nelson, Adam and Luke). Tom Rockliff and his 79.67 average wasn’t enough for both Burgess men to be proved right. Bonus points to Alex and Buzz, who like Greg, incorrectly backed a player on their own team for Dangergawn glory.
  • Greg really likes his own players. Rockliff backed for Dangergawn and highest mid scorer. Lloyd backed for best defender. Nelson similarly backed Yeo and Menegola down back and up forward.
  • Laird’s rampant finals series meant 4 of us backed highest scoring defender. At the end of the home and away season Angus Brayshaw was the highest scoring defender, who none of us backed – a fact that will surprise nobody.
  • Only two of us thought Grundy would be the highest ruck scorer. Jacobs, Ryder and Kreuzer are amusing selections with the benefit of hindsight.
  • None of us thought Devon Smith would prove to be the highest forward scorer. A lot of diversity in our selections here, with six different players nominated.
