Season Summary
Not much to say here. They’re the best. The question is how long can they stay the best.
The Mills and Gresham trade is instructive here. The Soldiers are encountering the problem of having more good players than they can keep, and have landed on a formula of trading out keeper level players for great draft selections. Will they be able to keep who they select at pick 4? They will if they’re Sheezel like, obviously. But what if they’re Josh Sinn like. Or Will Phillips. Or even someone like Horne-Francis. Can this team justify a keeper spot on that? Or will they simply return to the trade table, and try again the following year.
This isn’t an old team. But it isn’t a young one anymore either. Time has finally caught up with the Chiefs. It remains to be seen when it will catch up with the Defenestrators. The question is will the Soldiers put their chips in and maximise their chances of going 3 in a row. Or will they try to cop a short term stepback to try and keep the gravy train rolling? The Mills trade is an indication toward the latter. It is hard to argue pick 4 helps them more than Mills does when it comes to a flag in 2024. But the Soldiers are clearly banking on the idea they can do without Mills. They won’t notice. It won’t slow them down. They’re so far in front they can afford to trade away premium players to try and get the pillar of the next dynasty before this one is over. If it works out for them, it’s masterful. But those others with designs on winning the flag should take heart at the Mills trade. Success for the rest of us is just that little, little bit closer thanks to it.

Most Inspired Selection
Toby Greene
Pick 42
Focused predominately on established contributors and that approach mostly paid dividends here. Most of their selections featured for the Soldiers at some point during the season. Cameron, Greene, Zorko and Walker formed half the Soldiers forward line. That’s great work in anyone’s language. Some of these guys are likely to be kept in the face of the forward dearth, and the one least likely to be kept won the Franklin Medal.
Trades
Volume slightly down on the Soldiers usually prolific standards.
One imagines they’re disappointed in the deal with Pukekos for Yeo. The logic is sound. What use is pick 10 to a team gunning for the flag. The year before they traded what turned out to be pick 10 for James Sicily, and I imagine that move keeps coach Bridge warm at night. The logic is the same here, but the result hasn’t been as productive. Now we wait to see if they keep Yeo…
Sending out De Goey for Young is a win. De Goey was better in 2023, but Young is, well, younger, and his move into the Fremantle midfield toward season’s end yielded some very impressive results.
Sending out a third round pick for surprising 2023 star Mason Wood is very tidy work. Even if they don’t keep Wood, they won the flag, and Wood averaged 96 across the two finals he played for the Soldiers.

Player To Watch in 2024
James Worpel
This one is hard to answer. I’m more interested in who they keep and who they cut.
I’m going to go with James Worpel as I’m pretty sure he’ll be kept, and he’s one of the few they could keep who could pose question marks. Was great last season and justified the decision to keep him heading into 2023. Is he a long term mainstay in the Hawthorn midfield?
