Who Will You Be Barracking For In 2024?

Having a glance over the keeper and draft lists, and doing some simple maths, below are the AFL teams each club will be barracking for this year.

I’ve limited my analysis to the top 10 draft picks for each team because I considered it likely all these players would still be on their team’s list going into round 1 (Angus Brayshaw and Tarryn Thomas the exceptions to this rule).

Interestingly the Taxmanian Devils and the Defenestrators will be hoping for good fortunes for their top club as they have 6 players each from Carlton and GWS respectively. Both these teams play round zero, so these clubs will have a pretty good idea of what their team will be scoring during those early bye weeks. While at the other end, the Roughnecks have the most balanced list, with no more than 3 players from any one team.

  • Taxmanian Devils: Carlton – 6, Port Adelaide – 4
  • Defenestrators: GWS – 6, 4x OTHER TEAMS – 3
  • MaherShalalHashBaz: Sydney – 5, West Coast / GWS – 4
  • Lethal Vipers: Fremantle – 5, 3x OTHER TEAMS – 3
  • Solomon’s Soldiers: Brisbane – 5, Port Adelaide – 3
  • Puttanesca Chiefs: Geelong/ Melbourne/ North Melbourne – 4
  • Te Puke Pukekos: Adelaide / Sydney – 4
  • Threat Level Midnight: Brisbane / Fremantle – 4
  • The Love Sparkles: North Melbourne – 4, St Kilda / Geelong – 3
  • Roughnecks: Adelaide / Bulldogs / Essendon / St Kilda – 3

Some other interesting notes:

  • Sydney was the most popular club with 21 players kept or drafted, while Port Adelaide was the least popular (12), with only 6 of them keepers, showing just how terrible Port were as a fantasy team (others might use the word “efficient”).
  • The Love Sparkles had the most variety when selecting players with a player from 17 of the 18 clubs kept/drafted with their first 10 picks. Surprisingly it is West Coast that is the only team not represented on this list! No team kept a player from every club but the Sparkles got the closest with 15. They also drafted 9 of their first 10 draft picks from different clubs. All about diversity at the Love Sparkles (I assume they all lean far left politically and really get behind pride week at this club).
  • The Taxmanian Devils have drawn their list from the fewest AFL clubs, with 5 AFL clubs not represented on their list. In fact 75% of their list is made up from only 6 clubs. Staunch right-wing vibes from this club.
  • Everyone drafted or kept at least one player from Hawthorn, St Kilda and Richmond.
